As you read this, you are most likely sitting at your desk. Take a look around it. I’ll describe three potential scenarios for what you’ll see. It could be piles of papers, stacks of sticky-notes and floods of folders everywhere. Or perhaps you’re a neat freak with a large-sized vat of hand-sanitizer pumped with superfluous frequency. Or maybe you’re a happy medium with an overall tidy workspace save for a few documents you are currently working on and the select trinkets that adorn your computer.

Today’s advice is directed with a little extra love towards those with a tendency to clutter. In my experience, I’ve found that having a clean and organized workspace offers various benefits, such as improved productivity, creativity and health.

Look at it this way — you spend around eight hours or more per day five days out of the week living, breathing and working in that designated spot… that’s a lot of time! So why is it so important to keep a clean workspace? Let’s consider the following:

1. Health benefits

Less mess = less stress! Not being able to find something urgent in the middle of an unkempt desk can cause high stress, leading to avoidable symptoms such as fatigue, irritability and sleep trouble. Additionally, any lingering dust and germs can affect breathing, energy levels or cause headaches.

Tip — Keep microfiber cleaning cloths on hand to regularly dust off your screen, mouse and keyboard.

2. Increased spirits and productivity

An organized, clean desk that looks good has the power to make you feel good about where you work. When you feel good, your spirit is boosted and consequently so is your productivity. With a clean desk, you’ll find yourself with less distractions and more physical space that will translate to increased mental clarity, focus and efficiency.

Tip — Begin by recycling all those old papers/docs you don’t need

3. Positive professional and corporate image

Having a neat, well-organized desk is the easiest way to portray a positive self-image that impresses your boss and clients, whereas an untidy workspace can be a sign of an overwhelmed headspace that negatively affects your reputation.

Tip — Set an example in your office by scanning more and making fewer copies/printouts.
